From rural exodus to repopulation in Mexico's Mixteca Alta? Analyzing differential trends

This paper analyzes differential trends in rural depopulation and repopulation nine municipalities of Mexico's Mixteca Alta region, the southern state Oaxaca, based on census data interviews carried out 2019. From 1950 to 2000, study area experienced a substantial loss population, linked essentially out-migration Mexico City. However, from 2000 2020, four regained while remaining five continued losing residents. is explained by declining but still positive natural population growth combined with less slightly more in-migration, growing return migration. in-migration too small meaningfully explain transition massive repopulation, meaning that concepts such as counterurbanization rurbanization are not easily transposed onto area, they centre their attention former urban dwellers.
